What is a wireless broadband Internet connection?

Wireless broadband is a fairly new technology where your connection to the Internet is made by a radio connection to one of our antennas. This allows us to do some pretty amazing things. First, we aren't limited by cables like DSL or Cable Broadband. Our connection to you passes through the air. Since we aren't trying to make older technology (like television cable) work for data, we can achieve incredible speeds both from the network to you, and from you to the network.

How does all this work when I have 1 computer?

Both the single and multi-computer install begins with an antenna. The antenna is approximately 14 inches by 14 inches in size (but can vary) and will reside either within the attic or attached to the side of your home pointed at one of our antennas. An antenna cable runs from this device down into your house where it connects to a wireless LAN card. In a few simple install steps on your computer, you're surfing the web. We'll do all the work and provide all the equipment necessary.

I have a network in my home. Can I hook up all my computers?

Both the single and multi-computer install begins with an antenna. The antenna is approximately 14 inches by 14 inches in size and will reside either within the attic or attached to the side of your home pointed at our base station. A cable runs from this device down into your house where it connects to a wireless router or directly to your PC.  The router is a small (3 inches by 5 inches) device that sits near a connection to your existing network. The router plugs directly into your hub and you're ready to go!

Where does antenna mount?

Usually, we mount the antenna on the outside of your house. The antennas we use, in most cases are very unobtrusive.

I've heard this sort of thing called 'Fixed Wireless'. What's that mean?

Fixed wireless refers to the arrangement where an external antenna is used and 'fixed' in a location. To get the signal to your computer, a cable is run between the antenna and your machine or bridge. Antennas are fixed to ensure quality, uninterrupted service.

How fast is it REALLY?

Really fast! Our network is based on LAN (local area network) and WiFi technology (With a T1 Backbone).  With a clear signal, it can run up to 200 times faster than a 28.8 modem.  You'll be running up to 50 times faster than the a 28.8 modem. Uplink speeds are very fast as well. That means sending large e-mail attachments will send nearly 50 times faster than a standard modem! That's FAST!

Is this more secure than other ISPs?

To prevent anyone from 'listening in' on our network, we use only encrypted connections. Unlike cable modems where every thing you do goes by a list of your neighbors, wireless networks connect you directly to our systems and then out to the Internet on fiber optic lines. The encryption scheme we use is called 'WEP' for Wired Equivalent Privacy which makes all your data unreadable to anyone trying to listen in. Furthermore, all connections reside behind a firewall device that helps keep your computer hidden from prying eyes out on the Internet.

How about access when I'm away from home?

That would require a dial-up account (which we don't provide).  Any national provider will will work fine.

Are the radio connections harmful?

RF is a form of electro-magnetic signal that can pass through the air, walls, and for short distances even you! However, the signal power for our equipment is significantly lower than a normal cellular phone! There are safety guidelines that involve staying at least a foot away from an operating antenna but, since we typically place our antennas out of the way, there is NO danger what-so-ever.

What about privacy? Is someone watching what I do online?

Not at all. OINC Wireless does not monitor nor keep logs of what individuals using the service are doing beyond total bandwidth used and time online. These are used to help maintain the network only, and plan for expansion of our connections to the Internet. This also means that YOU are responsible for your own parental controls on your computer. We do not filter any access to the net and we are not responsible for any content you find on it that doesn't reside on our servers.

I've got a laptop. Can I surf from the pool or from my back porch?

The short answer is 'maybe.' Our wireless network is based on a loose 'line of sight' with one of our base station antennas. If the location you wish to surf from has near line of sight to us, a signal is possible. A separate antenna may be purchased that's portable and designed for laptop users, however we do not guarantee connectivity from this type of arrangement and we recommend you use the small antenna only as a secondary connection. At your home, we can setup a local area wireless network just for you that will allow you to reliably move around inside and outside your home.

Will I lose my connection every time a bird flies by or it rains?

Absolutely not. The hardware automatically corrects and compensates for brief interruptions, so even if a bird did happen to get in the way (and it would need to be a REALLY big bird) you probably wouldn't even notice. RF is not greatly affected by weather, so feel free to surf right through the rain! We recommend that you do not operate your computer, not just the wireless network, during lightning storms as surges through the power system may damage or destroy your computer.)
